The role: Technical Lead/Manager, YouTube Support

Like Google’s own ambitions, the work of a Software Engineer (SWE) goes way beyond just Search. SWE Managers have not only the technical chops to roll up their sleeves and provide technical leadership to major projects, but also manage a team of engineers. You not only optimize your own code but make sure engineers are able to optimize theirs. As a SWE Manager you manage your project goals, contribute to product strategy and help develop your team. SWE teams work all across the company, in areas such as information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design; the list goes on and is growing every day. Operating with scale and speed, our world-class software engineers are just getting started — and as a manager, you guide the way.

The Support team is responsible for key tools, infrastructure, and machine learning systems supporting YouTube’s content and internal operations – content review, copyright processes, automated spam detection and removal, and click-fraud. One of the key challenges is supporting the massive growth of YouTube while minimizing manual workflows through machine learning, efficiency, and optimizing the work of our support team. You will drive a team at the intersection of product, policy, and users.

This high-functioning team is looking for a new hands-on Engineering Manager with direct reporting responsibility for a growing team of engineers. You will be responsible for the overall planning, execution, and success of complex technical projects. This position is not a pure management position; Engineering Managers are expected to contribute technically to their projects. Our interview process will emphasize technical skills and management/organizational skills equally.
