The area: Product Quality Operations (PQO)

The Product Quality Operations (PQO) team fights for the users. We defend Google’s integrity by combating spam, fraud and abuse of our products. It’s a constant game of cat-and-mouse to stay ahead of the bad guys and ensure that our advertisers, publishers and users have a safe and seamless experience. We work with Engineering to define, communicate and enforce policies across nearly all of Google’s products in over 40 languages. PQO team members use their technical know-how and work across functions to develop innovative solutions that always put the user first.

The role: WebSpam Intelligence Analyst

At Google, data drives all of our decision-making. Quantitative Analysts work all across the organization to help shape Google’s business and technical strategies by processing, analyzing and interpreting huge data sets. Using analytical rigor and statistical methods, you mine through data to identify opportunities for Google and our clients to operate more efficiently, from enhancing advertising efficacy to network infrastructure optimization to studying user behavior. As an analyst, you do more than just crunch the numbers. You work with Engineers, Product Managers, Sales Associates and Marketing teams to adjust Google’s practices according to your findings. Identifying the problem is only half the job; you also figure out the solution.

Through your professional expertise and judgement, you work on multiple projects concurrently, developing analyses, models and methods to support and verify the impact of your recommendations. You share your expertise by consulting on projects, serving on committees and mentoring team members.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct complex data analysis and make recommendations that significantly impact the payoff for spam worldwide
  • Develop advanced analytical tools and algorithms to model the current, past, and anticipated behavior of adversarial and cooperative web sites, SEOs, and hackers
  • Model complex relationships between enormous sets of variables to develop new abuse detection signals, measure team impact, and prioritize abuse fighting methods
  • Lead cross-functional projects and long-term analytic development initiatives, managing multiple projects with competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Transform the current workflow to make more scalable, implement a model under which efficiency automation goals greatly exceed existing industry norms.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MS in Computer Science or Statistics. In lieu of degree, 6 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in statistical software (R, S-Plus, SAS, or similar).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science or Statistics.
  • 1 year relevant work experience
  • Deep expertise and experience with statistical data analysis such as linear models, multivariate analysis, stochastic models, sampling methods.
  • Experience using technology to work efficiently with datasets such as scripting, Python, statistical software packages (R, S-Plus, SAS or similar).
  • UNIX/Linux experience.
